Mise-en-scene

Still image: Dracula 1930.

As this still image is from a film made in the 1930's, the representations of men and women are different to the representations of men and women in the modern day. This can be shown through the facial expressions and body language of the cast. The woman is in her most vulnerable state, sleeping while the man, Dracula, seems to have the opportunity to over power her as he is gazing down on her and he is above her suggesting that he is more superior. The lighting used is notan. This makes the scene seem natural which makes you feel as if you are also part of the scene.

Film extract 1: White House Down, Action https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IICnAJXhWx4

The mise-en-scene in this film extract is largely different compared to the other two film extracts. The location of the extract is a well known place, the white house, which is typical of Action films as they are based in iconic locations and well known cities. Weapons are used as props, which is a typical convention of an Action film as there usually are fights and battles which links to the tension and chaos between the hero and villain. The cast used also has an influence on the mise-en-scene of the film. The lighting used in this scene is natural lighting to help the audience to understand its daytime. Channing Tatum is the main actor and protagonist of the film, using a well known actor is vital in an action film as this helps bring in attention and revenue to the film. There is distress in his facial expressions as he is seen in a difficult situation as he battling the villain, which creates tension for the audience. The costumes are modern and are all black, a typical colour worn in action films, which is different to the book thief as they are set in different eras.

Film extract 2: The Book Thief, War Drama film https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BoZR_sjeoM

The mise-en-scene in the book thief is different to both of the film extracts not only because it is a different genre but because it is also set in a different era. It is also a drama, so there isn't any warfare such as in White House Down or any fear such as Insidious. The location is Germany, which can also be detected through the actors and actresses acting as they both have German accents. The main prop in this scene is the book, which links back to the plot of the film. The costumes are styled as if they're actually from the 1930's-1940's, which helps the audience to understand the time period.

Film extract 3: Insidious, Horror https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3hJf7uN-GA

The mise en scene in Insidious is different to both the films above as it aims to relate to a typical household, to create fear . The setting is a family home, which the audience can easily relate to as they all hopefully have a home. The actress is a mother, who is wearing normal clothes, a sweater and trousers. The lighting however is quite dark and subtle, with small lighting which suggests that evil is overpowering goodness. The main prop used is a baby monitor, suggesting the mother has a baby. However, as it is a horror film average everyday props are usually affected by supernatural forces. There is fear and confusion within the mothers facial expressions which the audience will also be feeling during that scene. This creates fear within the audience, as the baby monitor is soon emitting demonic sounds.
